Creating a Fire Station in Bujanovac, Serbia

ABSTRACT

Abstract

The inspiration for working on this project stems from the fact that there is currently no fire station in Bujanovac. As an architecture student, it was essential to design a fire station that fulfills all functional and aesthetic requirements. The primary focus was on organizing access to the facility in order to ensure fast and unobstructed entry and exit in emergency situations, while also giving the institution a modern and visually appealing appearance. Such a facility is critically needed in the city where I live, as in emergency situations residents currently have to wait 25–30 minutes for firefighters to arrive from the nearest city, Vranje. With a population of approximately 50,000–60,000 inhabitants, the absence of a fire station represents a serious issue that directly affects public safety. In my design approach, particular emphasis was placed on safety and on creating a comfortable working environment for employees. The building includes three emergency exits and is designed with sustainability in mind. Materials are locally sourced to reduce transportation requirements, and the design incorporates natural ventilation, greenery, solar energy, and a geothermal system. Various analytical methods were used in the development of this project, including site visits and site analysis, interviews with fire service personnel, discussions with urban planners, design sketches, analyses of fire stations across Europe, and consultations with university professors.
