An Overview of the Byzantine Churches in North Macedonia

ABSTRACT

Byzantine architecture has created some of the most significant historical buildings that remain relevant part of the global heritage until the modern days. This style combines different aspects and creates spaces of great beauty and spirituality. The territory of today’s North Macedonia has a rich history and its treasury of cultural heritage includes large number of historical buildings that belong to different historical periods and represent the creative ideas and traditions of the past civilizations that lived there. This paper presents the examples of the Byzantine architecture preserved in the territory of North Macedonia. Within the research a total 50 Byzantine churches, located in different regions of the country, are included. This research focuses on the main characteristics of the byzantine churches, from historical, architectural and typological aspect.
